RESULTS OF VALLEY FLOOR BONDING QUESTION
A CAUSE FOR CELEBRATION
November 7, 2006 will go down as a momentous
day in Telluride’s history. Voters passed Ballot Question 2A
- 585-333 (64% majority) - and put into place $30 million toward purchase
and preservation of the Valley Floor. “This financial commitment
from the citizens of Telluride speaks volumes about who we are and
what we hold most valuable here - open space, healthy ecology, and
the breathtaking beauty of this valley,” said Jane Hickcox,
board member of the Valley Floor Preservation Partners (VFPP).
“Much gratitude goes out to the
Telluride community, especially to all who voted Yes on Question 2A,”
said Joan May, newly elected San Miguel County commissioner. “If
anyone holds any lingering doubt that this community supports saving
the Valley Floor, this should put their concerns to rest. Now let’s
present a united front as this next stage begins.”
The next stage is the valuation trial,
scheduled for February in Delta. The jury will determine a value for
the 570 acre parcel on the south side of the Valley Floor. The value
will be based on appraisals submitted by the Town of Telluride - $26
million; San Miguel Valley Corporation - $50 million.
“Voters provided our elected officials with a powerful tool
to take to the trial,” said Hickcox. “This show of community
support will also assist in our private fundraising efforts.”
VFPP is spearheading the private fundraising
campaign to keep the Valley Floor Forever Wild. “More the $6
million in pledges and donations have already been secured,”
said Hickcox. “Our efforts to save the Valley Floor have created
national awareness of the importance of saving our open spaces and
wild places. We’re making history here, in fact, this may be
the greatest conservation story ever told. We want everyone to be
a part of the story, and contribute to something lasting and meaningful
for generations to come.”
